Spiritist Review — 1869 · Allan Kardec

Chapter 35 of 122

Spiritist Bookshop.

Some time ago we had announced the project of publishing a rational catalogue of the works of interest to Spiritism, n and it was our intention to attach it, as a supplement, to one of the issues of the Review. In the meantime, the project of creating a special establishment for works of that kind having been conceived and carried out by a society of Spiritists, we gave it our work, which was completed in view of its new purpose. Having recognized the incontestable usefulness of this foundation and the solidity of the bases on which it rests, we did not hesitate to give it our moral support.

Here is in what terms it is announced, at the head of the catalogue that we are sending to our subscribers with the present issue:

“The interest that attaches itself more and more to psychological studies in general, and, in particular, the development that Spiritist ideas have taken these past few years, have made felt the usefulness of a special establishment for the concentration of the documents concerning these matters. Apart from the fundamental works of the Spiritist Doctrine, there exist a great number of books, both ancient and modern, useful for the completion of these studies, and which are unknown, or about which the information necessary to obtain them is lacking. It is with a view to filling this gap that the Spiritist Bookshop was founded. “The Spiritist Bookshop is not a commercial enterprise; it was created by a society of Spiritists, with a view to the interests of the Doctrine, and who renounce, by the contract that binds them, all personal speculation.

“It is administered by a manager, a simple agent, and all the profits established by the annual balance sheets will be entered by him into the General Fund of Spiritism.

“This fund is provisionally administered by the manager of the Bookshop, under the supervision of the founding Society. Consequently, it will receive the funds of whatever provenance, destined for this purpose, will keep an exact accounting, and will operate their movement until such time as circumstances determine their employment.”
