Spiritist Review — 1867 · Allan Kardec
Chapter 84 of 109
Complaint to the newspaper La Marionnette.
La Marionnette, a new newspaper of Lyon, had published the following article in its issue of last June 30:
“We note the arrival in Lyon of the anthropological and ethnological museum of Mr. A. Neger, successor of Mr. Th. Petersen.
“Among other extraordinary things, one sees in this wax museum: 1st an unfortunate princess of the Coromandel coast who, married to a great tribal chief, committed the infamy of forgetting her conjugal duties with a most seductive European, and died in London of a wasting illness; 2nd trichinae twenty times larger than nature, in all the phases of their existence, from the most tender infancy to the most extreme old age; 3rd the celebrated Mexican woman Julia Pastrana, dead of childbirth in Moscow, in the year of grace 1860. “It is not without legitimate astonishment that we learned of this premature death, considering that in 1865 Julia Pastrana was giving herself to equestrian exercises in a circus whose performances took place on the Napoleon promenade.
“How could a woman who died in 1860 pass through paper hoops in 1865? This makes one dream!”

As this issue was sent to us, we addressed the following complaint to the director:
Sir, Issue number 6 of your newspaper was forwarded to me, in which is found an article signed: Allan Kardec. I think I have no namesake; in any case, as I answer only for what I write, I ask you the kindness of inserting the present letter in your next issue, in order to inform your readers that Mr. Allan Kardec, author of The Spirits' Book, is a stranger to the article that bears his name and that he authorizes no one to make use of it. Receive, sir, my respectful greetings.
Allan Kardec.
The director of the newspaper immediately answered us the following:
Sir, Our friend Acariâtre, author of the article signed by mistake with your name, has already lamented the carelessness of the proofreader. Here is the sentence: This makes one dream Allan Kardec, an allusion to Spiritism. The embellishments of Lyon are all signed by Acariâtre. In our next issue we will rectify this mistake. Receive, sir, my respectful greetings.
E. B. Labaume.
