Chapter 74 of 93

Apocryphal phenomena.

— The following fact is related by the Evénement of August 2nd, 1866:

“For some days the inhabitants of the neighborhood adjoining the church of Saint-Médard were greatly disturbed by a singular, mysterious fact, which gave rise to the most lugubrious accounts and commentaries.

“They are carrying out demolitions around the church; the greater part of the demolished houses had been built on the site of a cemetery, to which is linked the history of the supposed miracles that, at the beginning of the eighteenth century, motivated a decree of the government which, on January 27th, 1733, ordered the closing of that cemetery, on whose door was found, the next day, this epigram: By order of the king… God is forbidden To work miracles in this place.
