Chapter 64 of 93

Children, spiritual guides of their parents.

Having lost a son of seven years, and having become a medium, a mother had her own son as her guide. One day she put to him the following question:

Dear and well-beloved son, a Spiritist, a friend of mine, neither understands nor admits that you can be the spiritual guide of your mother, since she existed before you and undoubtedly must have had a guide, even if only during the time when we had the happiness of having you at our side. Can you give us some explanations?

Reply of the Spirit of the child – Why do you wish to fathom all that seems incomprehensible to you? Even the one who appears to you most advanced in Spiritism is only at the first elements of this doctrine and knows no more than this or that person, who seems to you abreast of everything and capable of giving you explanations. – I existed a long time before my mother and, in another existence, occupied an eminent position through my intellectual knowledge.

But an immense pride had taken hold of my Spirit, and during several consecutive existences it was subjected to the same trial, without being able to triumph over it, until reaching the existence in which I was beside you. But since I was already advanced and my departure was to serve your progress, you who are so backward in the spiritual life, God called me before the end of my career, considering my mission beside you more profitable as a Spirit than as an incarnate being.

During my last sojourn on Earth, my mother had her guardian angel beside her, but temporarily, because God knew that it was I who was to be her spiritual guide and that I would bring her more effectively into the path from which she was so distant. That guide, whom she had then, was called to another mission when I came to take his place beside her.

Ask those whom you know to be more advanced than you, whether this explanation is logical and good, for it is possible that I am mistaken in expressing my personal opinion. In short, this will be explained to you, if you ask. Many things that are still hidden from you will appear clear to you later. Do not wish to fathom too much, for from that apparent preoccupation is born the confusion of your ideas. Have patience; just as a mirror clouded by a light breath little by little clears, your spirit, tranquil and calm, will attain that degree of comprehension necessary to your advancement. Courage, then, good parents; march with confidence, and one day you will bless the hour of the terrible trial that brought you into the path of eternal happiness, and without which you would still have many unhappy existences to traverse.

Observation. – That child was of an intellectual precocity rare for his age. Even while enjoying good health, he seemed to have a presentiment of his approaching end; he liked cemeteries, and without ever having heard of Spiritism, in which his parents did not believe, he often asked whether, when one is dead, one could not return to those one had loved; he aspired to death as a happiness and said that when he died his mother should not grieve, because he would return to her side. Indeed, it was the death of three children within a few days that led the parents to seek consolation in Spiritism. That consolation they found in abundance, and their faith was rewarded by the possibility of conversing at every moment with their children, for in very little time the mother became an excellent medium, having even her own son as guide, a Spirit who reveals himself through great superiority.
