Spiritist Review — 1865 · Allan Kardec
Chapter 18 of 102
La Luce.
Spiritism counts a new organ in Italy. The Light, Journal of Spiritism in Bologna, appears in monthly editions. (10 fr. per year for Italy). Here is the translation of its program:
“The dawn of a great day has arisen and already shines in the heavens. Spiritism, this astonishing fact, and for many an incredible one, has made its appearance in all parts of the world and marches with irresistible force. Today its adherents are counted by the millions and are spread everywhere.
“Important works and numerous special journals, owed to elite intelligences, are published on this sublime philosophy, principally in France, where many societies occupy themselves with it. Several cities of Italy also hold Spiritist meetings; in Naples and in Turin there exist many scientific societies; that of the latter city publishes the excellent journal Annals of Spiritism in Turin.
“Those who are ignorant of the principles of this new science strive in vain to ridicule it and to make its adherents pass for dreamers and ones who hallucinate. The communications between the invisible world and the corporeal world are in the nature of things; they have existed in all times, which is why their traces are found among all peoples and in all epochs. These communications, today more general, more widespread, manifest to all, have an object: the Spirits come to announce that the times foretold by Providence for a universal manifestation have arrived; their mission is to instruct men, opening a new era for the regeneration of Humanity. “It is in vain that the Pharisees of the age stir, that incredulity arms itself with a superb smile: they will not stop the star of Spiritism. The more it advances, the more its force grows and comes to bring down proud materialism, which threatens to invade all classes of society.
“If, then, in the most intelligent centers, in the greatest cities, in the capitals, they have for several years studied with interest this phenomenon which, outside the laws of vulgar science, manifests itself on all sides, it is because they have recognized its reality and have seen in it the action of a free and intelligent will.
“The journal The Light was founded with the object of propagating this new science, relying on the most instructive special works, among which we place in the first rank those of Allan Kardec, the learned president of the Spiritist Society of Paris, which will furnish us the matter of the philosophical part, and the theory of the experimental part. Study and good will are the two conditions necessary to arrive by oneself at experimenting. In the second part, our journal will contain the dictations of the Spirits: some on the most consoling philosophy and the purest morality, and the others, though familiar, will be chosen from among those most apt to inspire faith, love, and hope. Moreover, reviewing the Spiritist works and journals, we will publish all the facts susceptible of interesting our readers. No discussion will be entered into with persons who do not know the principles of Spiritism. “Faith and courage will render less painful our duty and easier the path to arrive at the truth.”
