Chapter 99 of 118
The voice of God
Have you heard the confused noise of the sea, resounding when the north wind swells the waves and they break, roaring their blades of silver upon the beach? Have you heard the sonorous din of the thunderbolt in the somber clouds or the murmur of the forest at the breath of the evening wind? Have you heard in the recesses of the soul that manifold harmony, which speaks to the senses only to traverse them and reach the thinking and loving being? If, then, you have neither heard nor understood these mute words, you are not children of the revelation and you do not yet believe. To these I will say: “Go out of the city in that silent hour, when the starry rays descend from the heaven and, gathering within yourselves your intimate thoughts, contemplate the spectacle that surrounds you and you will come before the dawn to share the faith of your brothers.” To those who already believe in the great voice of Nature, I will say: “Children of the new covenant, it is the voice of the Creator and of the conserver of beings that speaks in the tumult of the waves, in the rumbling of the thunder; it is the voice of God that speaks in the breath of the winds. Friends, listen still, listen sometimes, listen a long time, listen always, and the Lord will receive you with open arms.” O you, who have already heard his powerful voice here on the Earth, you will understand it better in the other world.
