Chapter 9 of 118
The law of progress.
Note. – This communication was received at the general session presided over by Mr. Allan Kardec.
If we consider Humanity in its primitive state and in its present state, when its first appearance on Earth marked its point of departure, and now, when it has traveled a part of the road that leads to perfection, it seems that all good, all progress, all philosophy, in short, cannot be born except from that which is contrary to it.
Indeed, every formation is the product of a reaction, just as every effect is generated by a cause. All the moral phenomena, all the intelligent formations are due to a momentary perturbation of intelligence itself. Only, in intelligence, we must consider two principles: one immutable, essentially good, eternal like all that is infinite; the other temporary, momentary, which is no more than an agent employed to produce the reaction from which each time the progression of men comes forth.
Progress embraces the Universe throughout eternity and never spreads itself so much as when it concentrates itself in some point. You cannot encompass, in a single glance, the immensity that lives, that is, that progresses; but look around you: what do you see?
In certain epochs, and we can say at foreseen, designated moments, there arises a man who opens a new road, who scales the arid crags with which the known world of intelligence is strewn. Often this man is the last among the humble, among the small, and yet he penetrates the high spheres of the unknown. He arms himself with courage, for this is necessary to him in order to struggle hand to hand against the prejudices, against the customs that have been transmitted to him; it is necessary to him in order to overcome the obstacles that bad faith sows beneath his steps, because as long as there remain prejudices to overturn, there will remain abuses and those with an interest in the abuses; it is necessary to him because he must struggle, at the same time, against the material needs of his personality, and in this case, his victory is the best proof of his mission and of his predestination. Having arrived at this point, where the light escapes strongly enough from the circle of which it is the center, all gazes turn toward him; he assimilates the whole intelligent and good principle; he reforms and regenerates the contrary principle, in spite of the harm, in spite of bad faith, and in spite of the needs; he reaches his aim, makes Humanity cross a degree and know what was not known.
This fact has already repeated itself many times and will yet repeat itself many others, before the Earth has attained the degree of perfection that befits its nature. But, as many times as may be necessary, God will furnish the seed and the worker. This worker is each man in particular, like each of the geniuses who illustrate it by a science often superhuman. In all times there have been these centers of light, these points of connection; the duty of all is to draw near, to help and to protect the apostles of truth. This is what Spiritism comes to say once more.
Hasten, then, all of you who are brothers through charity. Hasten, and the happiness promised to perfection will be granted to you much sooner.
Protector Spirit.
