Note. – The medium was occupied with matters foreign to Spiritism; she was preparing to write on personal matters, when an invisible force compelled her to discourse on what follows, despite her desire to continue the work she had begun. This explains the beginning of the communication:

“Here I am, although you did not call me. I come to speak to you of things very foreign to your preoccupations. I am the Spirit Jean Jacques Rousseau. For some time I have been awaiting the occasion to communicate with you. Listen, then.

“I think that Spiritism is a purely philosophical study of the secret causes of the inner movements of the soul, little or not at all defined until now. It explains, still more than it discovers, new horizons. Reincarnation and the trials suffered before attaining the supreme end are not revelations, but an important confirmation. I am moved by the truths that this means brings to light. I say means intentionally, because, in my view, Spiritism is a lever that pushes aside the barriers of blindness. The concern with moral questions is entirely yet to be born. Politics is discussed, which moves moral interests; private interests are discussed; one grows impassioned for the attack or the defense of personalities; systems have their partisans and their detractors, but the moral truths, those that constitute the bread of the soul, the nourishment of life, are left in the dust accumulated by the centuries. In the eyes of the multitude, all improvements are useful, save those of the soul; its education, its elevation are chimeras, good only to delight the priests, the poets, the women, whether as a fashion or as a teaching. “If Spiritism resuscitates spiritualism, it will restore to society the impulse that gives to some inner dignity, to others resignation and to all the need to elevate themselves toward the Supreme Being, forgotten and ignored by ungrateful creatures.
