Spiritist Review — 1861 · Allan Kardec
Chapter 67 of 131
Friends do not forget us in the other world.
One of our subscribers sends us the following conversation, which he had with one of his friends, whose loss had been deeply felt by him, through a medium who was a stranger, since he himself is not a medium. Besides the remarkable elevation of the thoughts, it should be noted that the bonds formed on Earth, when sincere, are not broken by death.
First conversation. – December 28, 1860.
Evocation. – Plea to the Spirit Jules P.., who was so dear to me, to come and communicate with me.
Answer. – Dear friend, I respond to your call with all the more eagerness as I did not expect to be able to communicate with you except at a time still remote by the will of God. How agreeable it is to me to see that time shortened by your will, and to be able to tell you how much the trial I suffered on Earth served my progress! Although still wandering, I feel completely happy, with no other thought than that of enthusiasm for the works of God, which permits me to enjoy all the wonders that He has been pleased to place at my disposal, leaving me to hope for a reincarnation in a superior world, where I shall follow the fortunate gradation that will lead me to supreme happiness. May you, dear friend, in hearing me, see in my words a presage of what awaits you! On the last day, I shall come to take you by the hand to show you the path that I have already been treading for some time with so much joy. You will find me as a guide, just as in earthly life you found me a faithful friend.
May I count on your assistance, dear friend, to attain the happy goal you allow me to glimpse?
Answer. – Be at peace; I shall do all I can so that you advance on this path where we shall both meet with so much emotion and pleasure. As in former times, I shall come to give you all the proofs of goodness of heart to which you were always so sensitive.
From your language I must conclude that you are much happier than in your last existence?
Answer. – Without contradiction, my friend, very happy, and I could never repeat it enough. What a difference! No more vexations, no more sadness, no more bodily and moral sufferings; and, with this, the sight of all that was dear to us! Often I was with you, at your side. How many times I followed you in your career! I saw you when you did not suppose me to be so near to you, since you believed me lost forever. My dear friend, life is precious to the Spirit, all the more precious as it is gentle; and, as on Earth, one can make it serve one's celestial advancement. Be well persuaded that everything is harmonized in the divine decrees to make the creatures of God happier, and that it suffices, on their part, to have a heart to love and to bow the head to be humble. Then one rises higher than one could hope.
What do you desire of me that might give you pleasure?
Answer. – Your thought adorned with a flower.
Note. – A discussion having arisen over the meaning of this answer, the Spirit added: When I say your thought adorned with a flower, I say that, in gathering flowers, you should sometimes think of me. You will understand that I wish, as far as possible, to make myself noticed by one of your senses, by touching you agreeably.
Farewell, dear friend. I shall gladly take the next occasion I have to evoke you.
Answer. – I shall await it impatiently. Until we meet again, dear friend.
Second conversation. – December 31.
Evocation. – A new request to my friend to come and give me a communication for the benefit of my instruction.
Answer. – Here I am again, dear friend; I ask nothing more than to come and tell you once again how dear you were to me. I wish to give you a proof of this, raising myself to the highest considerations. Yes, my friend, matter is nothing; treat it harshly; fear nothing, the Spirit is everything. It alone perpetuates itself and must never cease to live, nor to traverse the paths that God traces for it. At times it halts upon steep edges to catch its breath; but when it turns its eyes toward the Creator it regains courage and quickly overcomes the difficulties it encounters, rises, and admires the goodness of its Lord, who providentially distributes to it the energies it needs. Then it advances; the empyrean presents itself to its eyes, to its heart; it marches on and soon becomes worthy of the celestial destiny it glimpses. Dear friend, fear nothing more; I feel within me courage redoubled, strength multiplied tenfold, since I left the Earth. I no longer doubt the foretold happiness which, compared to that which I enjoy, will be as superior as the most brilliant of precious stones is to the simplest ring. Thus, you see how much grandeur there is in the celestial wills, and how very difficult it will be for human beings to appreciate and weigh their results! Your language scarcely serves us when we wish to express what must seem incomprehensible to you.
Have you nothing to add to the beautiful thoughts you have just expressed?
Answer. – Without doubt I have not finished; but I wished to give you a proof of my identity. When you wish, I shall give you others.
Observation. – These proofs of identity are here all moral and result from no material sign, nor from any of those puerile questions that some persons often put for that purpose. Moral proofs are better and surer, since material signs can always be imitated by deceiving Spirits. Here, the Spirit lets himself be recognized by his thoughts, his character, his elevation, and the nobility of his style. Certainly a deceiving Spirit could, in this respect, attempt the counterfeit, but it would never be more than a coarse imitation; as he would lack the substance, he could imitate only the form, nor sustain his role for long.
Since you are in this benevolent disposition, I would feel happy to take advantage of it now, and I ask you the kindness of continuing.
Answer. – I shall tell you: Open the book of your destinies; the Gospel, my friend, will make you understand many things that I would not know how to express. Leave the letter; take the Spirit of that sacred book and in it you will find all the consolations necessary to your heart. Do not trouble yourself over the obscure terms; seek the thought and your heart will interpret it as it should interpret. Now I am better informed and I confess to you the error into which we Spirits fell in regarding it so coldly when alive.
Happily, today I recognize that, impelled by my good heart, I could have, by understanding better the precious teachings that the divine Master left us, drawn from them the help that I lacked.
Thank you and farewell, dear friend; I shall gladly take the first occasion I have to evoke you.
Answer. – Do not doubt that I shall then come, as I come today. I shall do the best I can.
