Chapter 28 of 131
Ingratitude
One must always help the weak and those who wish to do good, even knowing beforehand that we shall not be rewarded by those to whom we do it, because the one who refuses to be grateful to you for the assistance you have given him is not always as ungrateful as you imagine; often he acts according to the point of view determined by God, although His points of view are not, and often cannot be, appreciated by you. Let it suffice for you to know that one must do good out of duty and out of love for God, for Jesus said: “He who does good only out of interest has already received his reward”. Know that if the one to whom you render a service forgets the benefit, God will hold it more to your account than if you had already been rewarded by the gratitude of the one you favored.
