Spiritist Review — 1861 · Allan Kardec
Chapter 122 of 131
The Mediums' Book.
The first edition of The Mediums' Book, published at the beginning of the year, sold out in a few months, which comes to be one of the most characteristic traits of the progress of Spiritist ideas. We ourselves were able to verify, in our excursions, the salutary influence that this work has exercised upon the direction of practical Spiritist studies; thus, the disappointments and mystifications are much less numerous than formerly, because it taught the means of frustrating the artifices of the deceiving Spirits. This second edition is much more complete than the preceding one; it contains numerous and important instructions and several new chapters. All the part that concerns more especially the mediums, the identity of the Spirits, obsession, the questions that may be addressed to the Spirits, the contradictions, the means of discerning the good Spirits from the bad ones, the formation of Spiritist gatherings, the frauds in matters of Spiritism, has received notable developments, fruits of experience. In the chapter on the Spiritist dissertations we have added several apocryphal communications, accompanied by pertinent observations, so as to provide the means of discovering the deception of the deceiving Spirits, who present themselves under false names. We must add that the Spirits revised the work entirely and brought numerous observations of the highest interest, so that it can be said that it is their work, as much as ours.
We insistently recommend this new edition, as the most complete guide, whether for mediums or for simple observers. We can affirm that, by following it punctually, one will avoid the so numerous reefs against which inexperienced beginners are going to dash themselves. After having read it and meditated upon it attentively, those who are deceived or mystified certainly will not be able to blame anyone but themselves, because they had every means to enlighten themselves.
