Chapter 19 of 94

Hitoti, Tahitian chief.

A naval officer, present at the session of the Society on the 4th of February last, expressed a desire to evoke a Tahitian chief named Hitoti, whom he had known personally during his stay in Oceania.

Evocation.

Answer. – What do you want?

Could you tell us why you preferred to embrace the French cause in Oceania?

Answer. – I liked that nation. Besides, my interest obliged me to do so.

Were you satisfied with the journey to France that we provided for your grandson and with the care we gave him? Answer. – Yes and no. Perhaps that journey perfected his Spirit considerably, but it made him completely a stranger to his homeland, providing him with certain ideas that would never have sprung from him.

Of the rewards you received from the French government, which were those that gave you the greatest satisfaction? Answer. – The decorations.

And among those decorations, which do you prefer?

Answer. – That of the Legion of Honor.

Observation. – This circumstance was unknown to the medium and to all those present; it was confirmed by the person who was making the evocation.

Although the medium who served as intermediary was intuitive, and not mechanical, how could such a thought have been his own? It might be admitted in the case of a banal question, but this would not be admissible when it concerns a positive fact, of which nothing could have given him an idea.

Are you happier now than when you were alive?

Answer. – Yes, much more.

In what state is your Spirit?

Answer. – Wandering; but I am to reincarnate shortly.

What are your occupations in this wandering life?

Answer. – To instruct myself.

Observation. – This answer is almost general among all wandering Spirits; those who find themselves more morally advanced add that they occupy themselves in doing good, assisting those who need their counsels.

In what manner do you instruct yourself, since you must not do it in the same way as you did when alive? Answer. – No; I work my Spirit; I travel. For you, I understand that this is hardly intelligible; later you will come to know it.

What regions do you frequent most willingly?

Answer. – Regions? Be persuaded that I no longer travel to your Earth. I go higher, lower, above and below, morally and physically. I have seen and examined with the greatest care worlds to the east and to the west that still find themselves in a state of terrible barbarism, and others that find themselves immensely above you.

You said that you would soon reincarnate; do you know in what world?

Answer. – Yes; I have already been there several times.

Could you designate it?

Answer. – No.

Why in your travels do you neglect the Earth?

Answer. – I already know it.

Although you no longer travel about the Earth, do you still think of some persons you loved there? Answer. – Little.

Do you not, then, occupy yourself with the persons who bestowed affection upon you?

Answer. – Little.

Do you remember them?

Answer. – Very well; but we shall see each other, and I hope to repay all of that. They ask me whether I concern myself with it? No; but for all that I do not forget them.

Have you not seen again that friend to whom I alluded a moment ago and who, like you, is dead? Answer. – Yes; but we shall see each other more materially: we shall incarnate in the same Sphere and our existences will draw near to each other.

We thank you for having heeded our call.

Answer. – Farewell. Work and think.

Observation. – The person who made the evocation and who knows the customs of these peoples declares that this last phrase is in accord with their habits; among them it is a locution of rather banal use, and one that the medium could not have guessed. He also recognizes that the interview, in its entirety, accords with the character of the Spirit evoked, and that his identity is evident.

The answer to question 17 offers a notable particularity: We shall incarnate in the same Sphere and our existences will draw near to each other. It is evident that beings who have loved one another will meet again in the world of the Spirits; but, according to several analogous answers, it sometimes seems that they may follow one another in another corporeal existence, in which circumstances bring them near to each other without their suspecting anything of it, whether by ties of kinship or by friendly relations. This gives us the reason for certain sympathies.
