Posthumous Works · Allan Kardec
Chapter 54 of 64
SPIRITIST PUBLICATIONS.
NOTE. — Mr. L… had just announced that he proposed to make Spiritist works in order to sell them at fabulously reduced prices. It was in this regard that Mr. Morin said what follows, in somnambulic sleep:
“Spiritists are already numerous today, but many still do not understand the eminently moralizing and emancipating scope of Spiritism. The nucleus that has always followed the good road continues its slow but sure march; it keeps away from all preconceived purposes and concerns itself little with those who fall by the wayside.
“Unfortunately, even among those who form this faithful nucleus, there are those who find everything magnificent, whether on the part of others or on their own part, and who easily, benevolently, let themselves be carried away by appearances and go foolishly to ensnare themselves in the birdlime of their enemies, of a personality who says he is stripping himself, giving his blood, his goods, his intelligence for the complete triumph of the idea. Well then! reread the communication (the communication that L… had just written) and you will see that, on the part of certain individuals, such sacrifices cannot be made without ulterior motives. “It is important to distrust ostentatious devotions and generosities, as well as the veracity of persons who say they never lie.
“To claim to give a thing at impossible prices, without loss, is to conceal speculation. To do still more: to give away free of charge, under the title of excess of zeal, under the title of a gift, all the elements of a sublime doctrine, is the height of hypocrisy. Spiritists, take care!”
