Chapter 34 of 64
MY MISSION.
By his firmness and perseverance, your President has undone the schemes of those who sought to destroy his credit and to ruin the Society, in the hope of dealing a fatal blow to the Doctrine. Honor to him! Let him be assured that we are at his side and that the Spirits of wisdom will feel happy to be able to assist him in his mission. How many would wish to perform the shadow of that mission, in order to receive the shadow of the benefits that flow from it!
But it is perilous, and to fulfill it, an unshakable faith and will are necessary, as well as abnegation and courage to confront the insults, the sarcasms, the disappointments, and not to be disturbed by the mire that envy and calumny may hurl. In that position, the least that can happen to whoever occupies it is to be called a madman and a charlatan. Let them speak, let them think freely: everything, except eternal happiness, lasts but a short time. Everything will be taken into account for you, and know that, in order to be happy, one must have contributed to the happiness of the poor beings with which God has peopled your earth. Let your conscience remain, then, tranquil and serene: it is the precursor of celestial happiness.
