Chapter 32 of 64
EVENTS. THE PAPACY.
Question (to the Spirit Ch.) — You were ambassador in Rome and at that time you foretold the fall of the papal government. What do you think today in this regard?
Answer. — I believe the time approaches when my prophecy will be fulfilled, but not without great pains. Everything is becoming complicated; the passions are exacerbated, and a thing that could have been done without commotion has gripped everyone, and in such a manner that the whole of Christendom will be shaken. Q. — Would you consent to give us your opinion on the temporal power of the Pope?
A. — I think that the temporal power of the Pope is not necessary to his greatness, nor to his moral power; on the contrary, the fewer subjects he counts, the more venerated he will be. He who is the representative of God on Earth is placed too high to need the enhancement of earthly power. To direct the Earth spiritually, such is the mission of the father of the Christians. Q. — Do you think that the Pope and the Sacred College, better enlightened, will do everything to avoid the schism and the intestine war, even though it be only a moral one?
A. — I do not believe so; all those men are obstinate, ignorant, accustomed to all profane enjoyments; they need money to satisfy them and will fear that the new order of things will not allow them to earn it sufficiently. For that reason they carry everything to the extreme, caring little about what may come to happen, being too blind to understand the consequences of their manner of proceeding. Q. — In this conflict, is it not to be feared that unhappy Italy may succumb and be placed under the scepter of Austria?
A. — No, it is impossible. Italy will emerge victorious from the struggle, and liberty will dawn for that glorious land. She saved us from barbarism, she was our mistress in all that intelligence has of the noblest and the most elevated. She will absolutely not fall again under the yoke of those who debased her.
