DEATH AND PASSION OF JESUS.

— (After the healing of the lunatic.) — All were amazed at the great power of God. And, while all were seized with admiration at what Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples: Keep well in your hearts what I am about to tell you. The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men. They, however, did not understand this language; it was so hidden from them that they understood nothing of it, and they even feared to question him about it. (Saint Luke, chapter IX, vv. 44, 45.)

— From that time on, Jesus began to reveal to his disciples that he had to go to Jerusalem; that there he had to suffer much from the senators, the scribes, and the chief priests; that he had to be put to death and to rise again on the third day. (Saint Matthew, chapter XVI, v. 21.)

— Being in Galilee, Jesus said to them: The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men; they will put him to death and he will rise again on the third day, which afflicted them extremely. (Saint Matthew, chapter XVII, vv. 21 and 22.)

— Now, as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took his twelve disciples aside and said to them: We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and to the scribes, who will condemn him to death and will deliver him to the gentiles, that they may treat him with mockery, scourge him, and crucify him; and he will rise again on the third day. (Saint Matthew, chapter XX, vv. 17, 18 and 19.)

— Then, taking the twelve apostles aside, Jesus said to them: Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all that the prophets wrote concerning the Son of Man will be fulfilled, for he will be delivered to the gentiles, they will mock him, scourge him, and spit in his face. After they have scourged him, they will kill him, and he will rise again on the third day. But they understood nothing of all this; that language was hidden from them and they did not understand what he was telling them. (Saint Luke, chapter XVIII, vv. 31 to 34.)

— Now, having concluded all these discourses, Jesus said to his disciples: You know that the Passover will take place two days from now and that the Son of Man will be delivered to be crucified. At the same time, the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the court of the high priest called Caiaphas, and began to consult together, seeking a means of skillfully seizing Jesus and of putting him to death. They said: It is absolutely necessary that it not be during the feast, lest any tumult arise among the people. (Saint Matthew, chapter XXVI, vv. 1 to 5.)

— On the same day, some Pharisees came to say to him: Go away, leave this place, for Herod wants to put you to death. He answered: Go tell that fox: I still have to cast out demons and restore health to the sick, today and tomorrow; on the third day, I shall be consummated. (Saint Luke, chapter XIII, vv. 31 and 32.)
