IMPENITENT CITIES.
— He then began to reproach the cities where he had worked many miracles, because they had not done penance. Woe to thee, Chorazin, woe to thee Bethsaida, for if the miracles that were worked within you had been worked in Tyre and in Sidon, they would long ago have done penance in sackcloth and ashes. I declare to you therefore that, on the day of judgment, Tyre and Sidon shall be treated less rigorously than you. And thou, Capernaum, shalt thou be exalted forever even unto heaven? Thou shalt be brought down to the depths of hell, for if the miracles that were worked within thee had been worked in Sodom, it might perhaps still subsist today. I declare to thee therefore that, on the day of judgment, the land of Sodom shall be treated less rigorously than thou. (Saint Matthew, chapter XI, vv. 20 to 24.)
