PERSECUTION OF THE APOSTLES.

— Beware of men, for they will make you appear in their assemblies, and will have you scourged in their synagogues; and you shall be brought, for my sake, before governors and kings, to serve them as witnesses, as well as to the nations. (Saint Matthew, chapter X, vv. 17 and 18.)

— They will expel you from the synagogues, and the time is coming when he who puts you to death will think he is doing a thing pleasing to God. — They will treat you in this way because they know neither my Father nor me. Now, I tell you these things, so that, when the time has come, you may remember that I told them to you. (Saint John, chapter XVI, vv. 1 to 4.)

— You will be betrayed and handed over to the magistrates by your fathers and your mothers, by your brothers, by your relatives, by your friends, and they will put to death many of you. You will be hated by everyone, on account of my name. Yet not a single hair of your head shall be lost. By your patience you shall possess your souls. (Saint Luke, chapter XXI, vv. 16 to 19.)

— (Martyrdom of Saint Peter.) Verily, verily I say to you that, when you were younger, you girded yourself and went where you wished; but, when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and lead you where you do not wish to go. — Now, he said this to indicate by what death Peter was to glorify God. (Saint John, chapter XXI, vv. 18 and 19.)
